In 1933, an ocean-going liner leaves Veracruz for Bremerhaven. On board, passengers from different nations, social positions and personalities gather together and, as strangers often do, start speaking frankly about their lives. Antipathy flares up along social, ideological and temperament lines while intimate relationships are also birthed as the ship slowly ploughs its way to its destination on the threshold of the Second World War. Oskar Werner gives one of his finest acting roles as the doctor struggling with a fatal disease. The Hungarian connections include that the cinematographer Laszlo Ernest won an Oscar for this film and the cast list includes Charles Korvin and Oszkár Beregi Jnr.
